Gardai hold pay protest meeting

Gardai up to the rank of superintendent are stepping up their campaign to force the Government to review their pay scales

Gardai up to the rank of superintendent are stepping up their campaign to force the Government to review their pay scales. They claim their basic pay has declined since 1981 and they object to being excluded from national wage negotiations. The latest in a series of meetings took place last night in a Co Kildare hotel.

Mr George Maybury, general secretary of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, said yesterday the present campaign will continue until its request for a commission on pay is granted, "even if it is necessary to continue the campaign beyond the life of the present Government".
