Gardaí are investigating the death of an elderly health board patient in Drogheda, Co Louth, this morning.

A member of staff has been taken off duty at St Mary's Hospital in the town while the Garda and Health Services Executive (HSE) open investigations.

The 79-year-old man died this morning at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

In a statement, the HSE said: "The HSE is aware of an alleged incident at St Mary's Hospital, Drogheda. Both the HSE and gardaí are investigating the allegation.

"A member of staff has been removed from duty pending these investigations. The HSE will be making no further comment."
