An allegation of fraud made against a member of staff at a Cork hospital is under investigation by gardaí.
Acting on a complaint by senior Health Service Executive officials, gardaí at Grá na Bráthair Station last Friday carried out a raid at St Mary's Orthopaedic Hospital in the city.
Gardaí confirmed this evening that during the search of an office at the hospital a member of staff became "agitated and injured himself". It is understood the man sustained knife injuries to his neck. He was taken to Cork University Hospital, where he underwent minor surgery. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Gardaí have seized a number of documents from the hospital. The investigation is ongoing and is likely to take some time.
