Gardaí in Co Cork have opened an investigation after they were contacted by social services about three-month-old twins brought to hospital with head and other injuries.

Officers began the inquiry last weekend when one of the twins from Co Cork was taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where he was diagnosed with brain bleeds.

The baby, who was in a serious condition, was transferred to Temple Street Children’s Hospital, Dublin, where he was put on a ventilator and remains in a critical condition.

Gardaí called to the babies’ family home in a rural part of Co Cork where they spoke to the children's teenage parents and their grandparents. The second twin was later admitted to Cork University Hospital on January 9th when it was discovered he too had suffered brain bleeds.
