Gardaí are investigating a car crash in Co Louth yesterday in which a mother and son died.

Gardaí are investigating a car crash in Co Louth yesterday in which a mother and son died.

The single-vehicle crash happened at about 2.30pm at Cangy on the old M1 south of Castlebellingham. Icy road conditions are believed to have been a contributory factor in the crash.

The woman (35) and her nine-year-old son died at the scene. The have been named as Leontina Covaci and her son Ezacheal Covaci of Rivervale Grove in Dunleer

The woman's husband, believed to be in his 30s, was driving the car. He was taken, along with the couple’s three-year-old daughter and an unrelated nine-year-old girl who were also in the car, to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The nine-year-old was later transferred to Crumlin's Children's Hospital where she was described as being in a critical condition today. The three-year-old girl was transferred to Temple Street Children's Hospital where her condition is described as stable. Her father was discharged from hospital.
