Gardaí have launched an inquiry after the discovery of a man's body near Ashbourne in Co Meath this afternoon.

Gardaí have launched an inquiry after the discovery of a man's body near Ashbourne in Co Meath this afternoon.

The body was discovered at around 3.30 p.m. at Curragha and the area has been sealed off for forensic examination. Chief Superintendent Michael Finnegan said the man had severe head injuries and was bound and gagged.

Deputy State Pathologist Dr Maire Cassidy carried out a preliminary examination at the scene. The body has been removed to the City Morgue for a post mortem examination.

The man's identity has not yet been established, but he is believed to have been in 30s and was wearing a dark blue tracksuit with white stripes.
