Garda detectives are to travel to the US next week in connection with the admission by Rev George Exoo that he attended at the suicide of Ms Rosemary Elizabeth Toole Gilhooly (49) in Dublin last month.

Under US law, gardaí are not permitted to question Rev Exoo directly but they may seek to be present for an interview conducted by their American counterparts.

Detectives from the Interpol section of the Garda are currently liaising with police authorities in Rev Exoo's home state of West Virginia with the aim of setting up the visit. If Rev Exoo and the man he alleges accompanied him to Dublin, Mr Thomas McGurrin, refuse to travel to Ireland for interview, gardaí may seek their extradition. The question of whether to seek the extradition is a matter for the gardaí and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The funeral service for Ms Gilhooly took place in the Church of Ireland church in Dalkey on Saturday. The mourners included her father, Mr Owen Toole, her two brothers, Stephen and Peter, and her former husband, Mr James Gilhooly. She was buried in Shanganagh cemetery.

... In keeping with its editorial policy on suicides, The Irish Times did not identify Ms Gilhooly in previous reports. However, her family yesterday said it had no objection to her being named here. She had been identified elsewhere, without the family's permission.
