DETECTIVES INVESTIGATING last Friday’s early morning attack on a new speed camera van, in which it was set ablaze and an occupant escaped, believe it was carried out by a gang with close links to dissident republicans.

The GoSafe speed detection vehicle was parked on the Carrickmacross to Dundalk Road when it was targeted.

Gardaí believe two men responsible for the arson were given the go-ahead by individuals close to the leadership of dissidents in the north Louth-south Armagh area.

One senior Garda source described the attack as a sinister development.
