Gardai in Dublin seized €7 million worth of cannabis resin this afternoon in the second major haul of the drug this week.

Officers from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation found one tonne of cannabis in a van they stopped on the M1 at Whitehall, Dublin, shortly after 1pm.

The drugs, which were discovered as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, have an estimated street value of up to €7 million, a garda spokesman said.

Two men aged 40 and 34 were arrested in connection with the find and were being held under Section 2 of the Drugs Trafficking Act at separate garda stations in Coolock and Santry.

It is the second large drugs haul discovered in the capital in the past few days, after cannabis resin worth €10.4 million was seized at a warehouse in south Dublin on Monday.

In that find, a total of 1.8 tonnes of the drug were discovered by gardai and officers from Revenue's Customs Service, after it was shipped into Dublin Port from Spain disguised as boxes of notepads.
