Gardai name father and son killed in four-vehicle Co Meath crash

A father and son lost their lives yesterday after a road traffic accident involving four vehicles in Co Meath.

A father and son lost their lives yesterday after a road traffic accident involving four vehicles in Co Meath.

The two men were named yesterday as Mr Joseph Jones (59), Rahan, Edenderry, Co Offaly, and his 31-year-old son, Mr Garry Jones, of the same address.

The accident happened at 9.10 a.m. on the N4 two miles west of Enfield. It involved a collision between four vehicles; a truck, two cars and a 4x4 vehicle.

One of the men was fatally injured at the scene. The other man, who was travelling in the same car, was taken to hospital where he died later.

The fatalities follow a weekend of separate accidents on the roads in which five people died.

Yesterday, two of the victims were named. The man who died on Sunday morning in an accident in Finglas was named as Mr Michael Hughes (66), Glenview Park, Tallaght.

Gardaí investigating the accident which happened at Mellowes Road are appealing for any witnesses to contact them at Finglas Garda Station, telephone 01-6667500.

A man who died on Sunday night following a two-car collision at 7 p.m. on the N18 near Crusheen, Co Clare, was named as Mr James (Jamie) O'Connor (57), Tubber, Co Clare.

Mr O'Connor was a member of a well known Clare hurling family and represented the county at minor level.

He was a keen sportsman and well-known entrepreneur. A member of a large family, Mr O'Connor is survived by his wife and three adult children.

Former chairman of Tubber GAA club, Mr Michael O'Grady paid tribute to Mr O'Connor yesterday. He said: "He was a great Tubber man, great to help neighbours and never let local people or the local club down." He added: "Jamie was way ahead of his time and in the seventies gave employment to a 100 people here at an engineering works. He was great for enterprise here."

Mr O'Connor was due to be sentenced at Ennis Circuit Court today after he signed a guilty plea last October at Ennis District Court to five charges brought against him arising from a seizure of cigarettes at a warehouse outside Ennis on December 6th, 2001.
