A man stabbed to death after a pub row was named last night as Martin O'Donoghue (35) from Limerick city.

The man, from Island View Terrace, St Mary's Park in the city, had been drinking in a pub on Broad Street on Sunday night when a row broke out, which spilled out on to the street shortly after midnight.

It is understood that several people were involved in the row in which the man suffered multiple stab wounds.

He was found in a laneway off Broad Street and was brought to Limerick Regional Hospital but pronounced dead a short time later.

A post-mortem carried out showed that Mr O'Donoghue had been stabbed once in the neck and three times in the abdomen and chest.

A second man was also injured in the row and was treated for minor injuries.

A man in his 30s from Limerick city was arrested shortly after the incident but was released before lunchtime yesterday.

Two other men and two women were arrested yesterday afternoon and were helping gardaí with their inquiries last night.

Gardaí have confirmed that Sunday night's murder was not connected to Limerick's much-publicised feud, which has claimed four lives in as many years.

"This incident happened after a row in a pub spilled out on to a street and the deceased was discovered in a nearby laneway with stab wounds," said one Garda source.

It is understood the people involved in the dispute knew each other and there had been longstanding animosity between them.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who was in the Broad Street area on Sunday night to contact them with any information at Henry Street Garda station.

Sunday night's fatal stabbing is the fourth murder in Limerick city since the start of the year. In February Charlie Craig (39) was stabbed to death in the Kileely area of the city.

A 17-year-old youth has been charged with his murder.

In April Rory Carey (25) was found with fatal stab wounds in Little Glentworth Street in the city.

Andrew Fitzgerald (35), Catherine Street, Limerick, has been charged with his murder.

In June Stephen Carey (24) from Moyross, died after suffering a shotgun wound to his upper body in College Avenue, Moyross.

James Keane (19), with an address at Craeval Park, Moyross, is charged with his murder.
