A Dublin man was being detained at Monaghan Garda station under the Offences Against the State Act last night, after an armed robbery in the town earlier in the day.
The robbery took place at 2.30 p.m., when a man with a sawn off shotgun held up a female cashier in the TSB bank at The Hill. He grabbed cash from the till and made off on foot.
The alarm was raised and a man was arrested in the grounds of Monaghan General Hospital nearby. A balaclava, sawn off shotgun and money were also recovered. The man detained is in his 20s.
