Gardaí last night recovered an undisclosed amount of cash that had been left in a car in Co Donegal as part of a ransom for a hoax kidnapping.
The PSNI said last night a Co Tyrone man was falsely told a member of his family had been kidnapped and would only be released if he left a four-figure sum as a ransom in a car in Lifford.
The victim received an anonymous phone call at his office in the bureau de change on the Lifford Road, Strabane, around 2.00pm.
It is understood he was told to cross the Border and leave the money in a red car that had been left in a car park in Lifford.
A PSNI spokesman said: "On returning home to Strabane the victim checked that all his family were safe and alerted police. The money was later recovered by gardaí, and inquiries into the incident are continuing."
