A MAN arrested in connection with the road crash near Ballina on Saturday in which a Polish mother and her daughter were killed has been released without charge.

A file on the matter is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The two women who were killed have been named as Marta Krawczyk (39) and her daughter Sabina (15), from Cracow.

They were rear seat passengers in a Honda Civic which spun off the road and ended up overturned in a field at Knockbrendan on the Quay Road, Ballina, shortly before midday on Saturday.

A man, who is Polish but who has been working in Ireland for a number of years, was arrested on Sunday morning and held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act for questioning.

The two women who died had been visiting relatives in Enniscrone, Co Sligo, and were intending to return home to Cracow later this week.

It is expected that an inquest into the women’s deaths will be opened and adjourned later this week to facilitate the repatriation of the remains to Poland.

Gardaí in Ballina are looking for witnesses to the crash and have appointed an officer to liaise with the family and relatives of the two deceased.
