An arrest warrant for Peter Darragh Quinn, the nephew of bankrupt businessman Seán Quinn, remains in place today after he was sentenced to three months in prison - along with his cousin - for contempt of court.
A garda spokesman said the force was still trying to locate Mr Quinn after he failed to appear at a hearing in the High Court yesterday. The court was told that his solicitor received a message at 10.15am – 15 minutes before the hearing started – to say he was sick and unable to attend.
A warrant was issued for his arrest after repeated attempts by his legal team to contact him via phone, text and email, and by calls to his father, brother and sister.
Police have visited the known addresses of Peter Darragh Quinn in the Republic in a bid to arrest him.
While officers visited all his known addresses within the Republic, his home is in Fermanagh and as a result outside the jurisdiction.
It is understood a European Arrest Warrant must be issued before the Police Service of Northern Ireland can become involved.
Seán Quinn jnr (33) spent his first night behind bars after he was jailed in the same hearing for failing to comply with orders aimed at returning multimillions of euros worth of assets to the control of the former Anglo Irish Bank.
Quinn jnr (33) was jailed for three months, while Seán Quinn snr escaped prison for what Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne described as “outrageous” contempt of court orders, stripping assets from their €500 million international property group.
He is to serve his sentence in the low-security training unit of Mountjoy Jail, an Irish Prison Service spokesman said today.
The only son of the former billionaire businessman is the sole person to be jailed in the aftermath of the collapse of Anglo Irish Bank.
