Gardaí in Cork are appealing for the driver of a car to come forward following aaccident on Thursday night which left a motorcycle pillion passenger dead and his friend seriously injured.

Mr Damien Murray (20), Glencurrig Park, South Douglas, was a passenger on the motorcycle that was in a head-on collision with a car on the South Link Road in Douglas, near the Kinsale Road dump about a mile from Cork City.

Mr Murray was killed instantly and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the motorcycle was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment and is "critical but stable".

Togher gardaí confirmed they are searching for the male driver of a 90 C registered red Volkswagen Golf in relation to the incident.

Reports indicate that both vehicles were travelling in the same direction on the dual carriageway when it is believed that the car carried out an illegal U-turn on the outbound lane, hitting the motorcycle head-on.

The driver of the car failed to stop and fled the scene.

Investigations are continuing into the accident and gardaí are anxious to talk to witnesses or anyone who may be able to help trace the driver of the car.
