Gardaí have appealed to the public to help identify two men who subjected a taxi driver to a savage attack before leaving him for dead on the side of the road in Co Tipperary.

The taxi driver was stabbed in the chest with a knife and a screwdriver and forced from his car shortly before 1am on August 4th last after collecting a fare in Limerick city.

The driver collected two men at his taxi base at Treaty Cabs on Davis Street, Limerick, and took them to Newport in Co Tipperary, where he was attacked and thrown out of the car.

The taxi was later found in the Childers Road area of Limerick.

The base operator in Treaty Cabs became concerned when the cab driver did not answer his phone, and alerted the

authorities.

The taxi driver, who has worked with the company for six years, was hospitalised, but was released the following day.

Sgt Tony Wells of Nenagh Garda station said gardaí wanted to hear from anyone who may have seen anything either on Davis Street or in Newport in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

Sgt Wells said the two assailants were aged in their 20s and both spoke with local accents.

One of the men had short black hair, was of slight build and about 1.7m (5ft 7in) in height. He was described as wearing a black tracksuit with a white stripe, and a grey sweatshirt inside.

The second man had short, mousey-coloured hair and was wearing white runners, white socks and a black tracksuit.
