Gardai in Carlow have appealed for witnesses in their investigation into the fatal stabbing of a 28-year-old woman in the town early on Sunday, writes Chris Dooley.

A post-mortem on Ms Dervla Keating, of Avondale Drive, Carlow, confirmed she died of a stab wound, Supt John Murphy said yesterday.

Ms Keating and her boyfriend, Mr Alan Walsh (23), from the St John's Park area of Waterford, were stabbed in a house at Riverside, close to her home. She collapsed and died after they emerged from the house at about 2 a.m. seeking help.

Mr Walsh was in a stable condition in St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny, were hoping to interview him last night.

Supt Murphy said anyone who was in Kennedy Street, Kennedy Avenue, the car-park at Tesco or Riverside between 11 and 11.30 p.m. on Saturday should contact Carlow Garda station at (0503) 31505.

A man who presented himself at the station early on Sunday was released after questioning. A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
