Gardaí have begun their annual crackdown on the use of illegal fireworks at Halloween.
Operation Tombola, which relies on Garda intelligence as well as high-visibility policing activity, began yesterday.
A Garda spokesman said the operation would particularly concentrate on Dublin and Border regions.
"The public is reminded that the importation for sale of fireworks into this jurisdiction without licence is illegal and any person found in possession of such items may be liable to criminal prosecution," the spokesman added.
"In many cases, illegally imported fireworks come from very dubious origins and safety of the products may well be compromised."
Ireland has one of the strictest laws relating to the sale of fireworks and has the lowest reported accident rates caused by fireworks, along with Greece.
