The Gardai will co-operate fully with an inquiry into clerical sex abuse in Co Waterford, the Garda Commissioner, Mr Pat Byrne said this evening.

Commissioner Byrne also said he was not happy with the with the original investigation into the allegations of indecent behaviour towards them by the late Father Jim Grennan in Monageer.

He was speaking at the first joint conference of the Garda and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) at the Garda Training College in Templemore, Co Tipperary.

Garda Commissioner, Mr Pat Byrne, was joined by acting PSNI Chief Constable, Mr Colin Cramphorn, Garda Chief Superintendent, Mr Pat Craig and Assistant Garda Commissioner, Mr Kevin Carthy, at the first day of the two-day conference.

This is the first time that a formal meeting of the senior management of the two police forces has taken place, and it is planned to stage the conference on an annual basis.

Community safety, road safety, disaster planning and criminal overviews in both Northern Ireland and the Republic were on the agenda.
