Gardaí are conducting a major investigation into a road tragedy which claimed the lives of a middle-aged couple and an elderly woman in Co Donegal on Sunday.
The three dead were named yesterday as Damien Quigg (49) and his wife, Theresa, from Finvola Park, Dungiven, Co Derry, and Nora McGee (74), Gortahork, Co Donegal.
A motorcyclist also remains in a serious condition at Sligo General Hospital following the accident.
A child who was a passenger in one of the cars involved was described as being in a stable condition.
The accident occurred just after 6pm at Ballymacgroarty, Ballintra, in what were described as "perfect" road conditions on the main N15 road between Ballyshannon and Donegal town. It involved several vehicles and brought the weekend road death toll to six.
The road remained closed yesterday evening as gardaí from the accident investigation unit in Dublin examined the scene.
The accident involved four cars, a truck and two motor-cycles, according to firefighter and local Fianna Fáil councillor Jonathan Kennedy. He described the scene as "total carnage" and "unbelievable".
Three other people also died in separate road accidents in counties Cavan, Galway and Mayo at the weekend.
Anthony Smith (21), Castle-rahan, Cavan, died when the car in which he was a passenger went out of control about 3.30am at Killquilly, Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, on Sunday.
An 18-year-old man died at University College Hospital, Galway, on Sunday after an accident at 4.30am on Saturday on the Dublin Road at Renmore Park, Galway. Five people were in the car which crashed into a wall.
The sixth victim died in an accident at 7.30am on Sunday. The car in which the 22-year-old man was travelling overturned at Caheravoostia, Hollymount, Co Mayo. A second man was taken to Castlebar hospital.
