Gardai have warned that 1,000 detonators which were stolen from a railway station office in Kildare town may be sold and used by children for Hallowe'en festivities.

A Garda spokesman described the detonators as "very dangerous" and capable of causing serious injury. Five boxes of the red and yellow detonators were stolen from the deserted station on Wednesday night.

The cylindrical devices are about 50mm in circumference, 12mm in height, and detonate on impact.

They are used by railway staff to warn trains to slow down or stop when there is a problem on the line.
