Retired detective sergeant Bernard Sherry, who is now retired, said an informant told him he had seen Mr Corbally being beaten in a field and that he was taken away in a white Lancia Dedra.

The car was later found burned out near the airport.

“He informed me he had been told by others that Mr Corbally was killed and his body disposed by putting him in a hole with quicklime,” Mr Sherry said.

“I’m satisfied from my inquiries he was killed on the night of 28th February, 1996, and to date no person has been brought to justice for his death.”

His body is believed to be buried in the vicinity of Clane, Kill and Straffan.

Over a period of time Mr Corbally had a number of run-ins with dangerous criminals involved in organised crime and drug trafficking and as a result feared for his safety, the inquest heard.

A number of areas were explored including a drugs find by gardaí in Sutton railway station, where they believe certain criminals blamed Mr Corbally for the recovery of the drugs and an altercation years earlier with a criminal where Mr Corbally had given the criminal a beating.

That criminal was one of the suspects, the court heard.

A file was sent to the DPP but no prosecutions were directed due to a lack of evidence.

With an year of Mr Corbally’s death two people named as being involved were murdered – one was shot and one was beaten to death.

Gardaí believe about five people were involved in Mr Corbally’s death.

After the inquest, Derek Corbally called for anybody with information regarding the location of his brother’s body to come forward as they wanted to hold a funeral. “This is another chapter closed . . . we just want a location. We know it’s in the Straffan area . . . if someone could put a marker there,” he said.
