One of the easiest ways of bringing a bit of autumn and winter colour into the garden is to cheat. Pot up large containers with any of the following: violas, pansies, polyanthus, heathers, chrysanthemums (the "pot mum" type). Don't mix too many colours or varieties together; keep it simple for maximum impact. Use free-draining compost that will not become water-logged in wet weather . But be aware that wind can dry out pots, so be prepared to water occasionally. Heathers are especially vulnerable: they are unlikely to recover if they become parched. More permanent and shapely container plantings can be created by using topiarised box, bay or holly. Add a "skirt" of trailing ivy or periwinkle if you want to cover the surface of the compost. A layer or two of bulbs will brighten things up in spring.
