IF you want to move spring-flowering bulbs and tubers such as daffodils, scillas, crocuses and erythroniums, do it as soon as they have finished flowering. Consider repositioning daffodils at the back of the border, so you don't have to gaze upon their dying leaves for the next few months.

Some herbaceous plants need to be rejuvenated every few years in dig up, divide, discard and replant operation. If you haven things that didn't flower so well last year, dig them up, divide the roots into portions containing about six good shoots each, discard any woody or tired bits and replant the good bits. Refresh the soil first with good garden compost, well-rotted manure and a handful of bonemeal (wear gloves) or organic fertiliser. Do it now as it will be soon be too late. And when, dividing so late in the year, be wary of the hot, dry spells which often occur in April. Keep vulnerable plants well watered.
