This is the perfect time to plant clematis as it allows them to get their roots nicely established for next year. Follow Pat Dillon's instructions and you should have a "clematis fit to be seen in a magazine".

First, water the clematis well in its pot, or plunge into a bucket of water. Dig a hole at least 18 inches wide and deep (on lighter soils two feet is more appropriate). Put a layer of farmyard manure on the bottom and refill with good soil mixed with peat, leaf mould or garden compost. Mix in a handful each of bone meal and rose fertiliser, and two egg cups of sulphate of potash. Plant the clematis, firm the soil and water well. For the first year give the plant two gallons of water three times a week. In late

March, give another handful each of rose fertiliser and bone meal. Feed fortnightly with tomato food, except when in flower.
