Garvaghy parade ban to continue

Portadown Orangemen have again been prevented from parading on Garvaghy Road at the end of this month

Portadown Orangemen have again been prevented from parading on Garvaghy Road at the end of this month. The Co Armagh lodge has been banned from the road since 1997 because of opposition from nationalist residents.

The decision to turn down the application was unanimous, Parades Commission chairman Roger Poole said yesterday.

This means that two members of the Portadown lodge who are members of the commission voted not to permit the parade.

"We believe that a parade along the Garvaghy Road may serve to destabilise the situation," Mr Poole said.

However, he added: "We are convinced there is scope for the development of trust and understanding that will lead to a resolution of the problems surrounding contentious parades in Portadown."

The Orange institution is opposed to the Parades Commission and to any communication with it. However, David Burrows and Don MacKay, both Portadown Orangemen, accepted positions on the commission when it was reconstituted last November.
