GAA:Dublin got off to a winning start under new manager Jim Gavin with a 3-13 to 1-12 victory over Carlow in their O'Byrne Cup round robin match at Dr Cullen Park.
Despite losing Michael Darragh Macauley to a dead leg after 18 minutes – he was replaced by Denis Bastick – the Dubs were always in control from the moment that Diarmuid Connolly grabbed the first of his team’s three goals.
Elsewhere in the O’Byrne Cup there were wins for Meath, Louth, Offaly, Westmeath, DIT amd Carlow with Wicklow and DCU playing out a draw.
A late goal from Conor McAlliskey gave Tyrone a 1-14 to 0-15 win over Derry in Omagh in the McKenna Cup while Monaghan, Down and Antrim also prevailed.
