The gay American Episcopalian bishop, whose appointment sparked controversy in the Anglican community worldwide, is due to address church members in Ireland next month.

Canon Gene Robinson - who is involved in a long-term homosexual relationship - will address the Diocese of Limerick and Killaloe at their annual retreat in Dingle.

Canon Robinson (56), who was elected Bishop Coadjutator of New Hampshire in June, is the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican community.

The Limerick and New Hampshire dioceses have developed strong links in recent years and last year Canon Robinson lectured at the Dingle retreat. These links, described as informal, include the exchange of personnel and consultation on liturgical and theological matters.

Canon Bob Hanna, press officer for the Diocese of Limerick and Killaloe, confirmed that Canon Robinson was due to address this year's Dingle retreat in September. "We are impressed with him as a speaker and as an administrator," he said.

Canon Robinson has lived with his gay partner for the past 13 years. The father-of-two, who has served the Diocese of New Hampshire for nearly 30 years, said he left his wife when God called him to acknowledge himself as a gay man.

His controversial election marred the Episcopal conference in the United States last month and his appointment is likely to have a major impact on the wider Anglican community.
