A Palestinian suicide bomber in a jeep killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded a third today when he blew himself up on a road they were patrolling in the northern Gaza Strip, the army said.

An army spokeswoman said a Palestinian woman on the roof of a house signalled to the soldiers that a jeep parked in the mud near the Jewish settlement of Dugit needed help. As the soldiers approached, the bomber set off his explosives, killing himself and two of the soldiers.

"A third soldier was slightly wounded", the army said.

In a different version of events, Palestinian security sources said the deaths were the result of a fumbled Israeli training exercise which took place in an area under Israeli security control.

The bloodshed came as US and European envoys met Israeli leaders to shore up a shaky truce between the Palestinians and Israelis. Each side has now suffered six fatalities since the ceasefire went into effect nine days ago.
