Sir Bob Geldof will receive an honorary fellowship today from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in recognition of his humanitarian efforts to tackle poverty.
College president professor Gerald O'Sullivan said Sir Bob's award, the highest the college can bestow, was in recognition of his work to eradicate debt and hunger in the developing world.
"Bob is an effective leader because of his courage, ambition and determination," Prof O'Sullivan said.
He added that the college shared similar aims to Sir Bob and because of "recent economic advantages" had been able to expand its work in Africa and Asia. "Our goal is to develop programmes that will endure and contribute significantly to local health care."
Sir Bob will also deliver this year's leadership lecture at today's ceremony, which will be attended by around 200 people.
Previous recipients of the honorary fellowship include President Mary McAleese, former South African president Nelson Mandela, Dr Garrett Fitzgerald and author Seamus Heaney.
