New Delhi - The Indian government introduced legislation yesterday which proposes setting aside a third of the seats in parliament and state legislatures for women. "The introduction of the women's reservation bill in the Lok Sabha is a historic victory for our democracy and women," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madanlal Khurana said.

But the bill drew noisy protests from deputies representing regional groups, who said the legislation did not reserve seats specifically for Muslim women and women belonging to backward communities.
