Last Wednesday's Dublin Jazz Society concert had the benefit of some quality mainstream imports in trombonist George Masso and saxophonists Joe Temperley and Harry Allen. Skilfully backed by Hugh Buckley (guitar), Dave Fleming (bass) and John Wadham (drums), they were hugely enjoyed by a capacity audience which seemed to know what to expect and was not disappointed.

If much of what was performed was predictable, there were also moments to savour. Chief among these came from tenor saxophonist Allen, a virtuoso, and Hugh Buckley, both of whom produced the most consistently interesting soloing throughout - despite a tendency on the guitarist's part to climax his solos in a similar manner. Allen, especially, was a joy. His tenor seems to have taken a Getzian shift, lyrically and tonally, with a full sound in every register, particularly beautiful at the top of the range, all of which were exhibited in a gorgeous Over The Rainbow. If that was a highlight, two other ballad features were not far behind - Masso on Don't Take Your Love From Me and Temperley's baritone on In A Sentimental Mood.
