GERMANY/UN: Germany said yesterday it did not see any reason at the moment for a second United Nations resolution, which could authorise military action against Iraq.
President Bush said on Thursday the US would welcome a new resolution, which would make clear the Security Council stood behind its previous demands.
"At this point in time, the German government thinks there is no reason to pass a second UN resolution on this subject," government spokesman, Mr Hans Langguth, told a regular government news conference in Berlin.
"The German government, like the majority of Security Council members, is of the opinion that the inspectors should continue with their work to achieve a peaceful solution to the conflict as set out in resolution 1441," he added.
Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has angered the US by repeatedly saying Germany would not vote in favour of any new resolution authorising military action against Iraq.
He has declined to rule out abstention. - (Reuters)
