Racing: Ghanaati was a shock 20-1 winner of the stanjames

Racing:Ghanaati was a shock 20-1 winner of the stanjames.com 1000 Guineas at Newmarket as hot favourite Rainbow View lost her unbeaten record.

The Giant's Causeway filly, trained by Barry Hills and ridden by his son Richard, was always handy and kicked on a furlong out to win by a length and a half.

Jim Bolger's Cuis Ghaire (12-1) was second with Super Sleuth (33-1), trained by Brian Meehan, a length and a quarter away third.

Penny's Gift broke well on the far side, but she was joined by Cuis Ghaire before Devotee went on with Rainbow View not far off the pace in fifth.

Cuis Ghaire then made a bid for glory but she could not shrug off the opposition.

Ghanaati always had her in sight and Hills soon let her go to power up the hill and stamp her authority on the Classic.

Cuis Ghaire plugged on well while Super Sleuth came from way back to claim minor honours.

Rainbow View could not find top gear and finished just behind the placed horses.

The delighted winning rider said: "I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's good for my father as well, his second winner of this race. She's from a super family with horses like Nayef and I rode her mother Sarayir.

"To be honest my father has been very confident building up to the Guineas.

"She was a filly who was always going to improve and she's got a lot of class.

"We respected the favourite and John's (Gosden) horses have been running very well, as my father's have.

"I'm very lucky, I get all the glory by doing the steering. The ones at home do all the work and I'm appreciative of them all."

Hills senior said: "She's a very good filly, I've always liked her and she's always done it very well.

"I didn't want to run her at less than a mile and I'm very confident she'll get a mile and a quarter."

Winning owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum added: "He kept it quiet about her! "I asked him how she was at Newmarket and he said to me she was coming on the right way and said he was happy with her.

"I think trainers with experience they know their animals. He lives for his horses."

Bolger, saddling his second Classic-placed runner of the weekend after Gan Amhras' third in the 2000 Guineas, said: "We're very happy - if you have to be second this is the best place to be second. We are expecting her to come on for the run - the ground has been a bit soft in Ireland and we were not able to get in a final gallop.

"She will stick at a mile and probably go for the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh."

Meehan was another trainer in the Classic frame again after Delegator's second in the colt's version.

He said: "I think if we had got rain this weekend I might have won two Guineas. She would prefer more cut in the ground but she ran a good race in her trial and has worked very well since.

"I think she will go for an Oaks now and my first thought is the Prix Diane."
