The unbeaten Patriots advanced to their fourth Super Bowl in seven seasons after seeing off the San Diego Chargers 21-12 in the AFC Championship Game to become the first team in NFL history to win 18 consecutive games in a season.

The Giants secured a thrilling 23-20 victory over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in the NFC Championship game and will contest American football's showpiece event for the first time in seven years.

Star New England quarterback Tom Brady was intercepted three times against the Chargers at Gillette Stadium but Laurence Maroney rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown, while solid defence saw the home side to victory.
