Dr Gibbs drowned her teenage daughter in a bath before taking an overdose of sleeping tablets and anti-depressants, the Central Criminal Court was told

yesterday. She told investigators she believed there was no hope for herself nor her daughter Ciara, who she feared was anorexic.

The jury was urged by both prosecution and defence to return a verdict of not guilty by insanity.

The details of the lead-up to Ciara's murder and Dr Gibbs's family and mental history were put before the court in Dublin yesterday, with consultant psychiatrists in agreement she should be kept in secure psychiatric care but not be held responsible for her daughter's killing.

After today's verdict she was committed back to the Central Mental Hospital for further treatment.
