Show events: Two Mayo men, Tiernan Gill jnr and snr, hit the jackpot at the RDS yesterday, taking the supreme young horse championship and reserve in the judging for the prestigious Laidlaw Cup.

Incredibly, the duo had never previously won a championship in Dublin, but they more than made amends this week, notching up a hat-trick when lifting the two- and three-year-old titles on Thursday and then adding the overall honours yesterday.

The Laidlaw Cup went to the Gills' three-year-old champion, Flogas Marbella, a son of Into The West which the Gills bought earlier in the year.

Bred in Co Galway by Mairtín Grealish, the flashy chestnut gelding won on his only outing in Westport, was kept under wraps for Dublin, and the plan worked to perfection.

Doubling the celebrations in the Gill household, Tiernan Gill snr was then called in to stand reserve with the filly champion and two-year-old winner, an unnamed daughter of Limmerick bought at the Cavan sales as a foal.
