Athletics: David Gillick's impressive form this season has been recognised as he was named European Athlete of the Month for February.
The Dubliner retained his European indoor 400 metres title in Birmingham earlier this month but is was technically his performance in Dusseldorf at the start of February that led to today's award.
The 23-year-old, who has based himself in Loughborough under coach Nick Dakin, ran the fastest time of the year and a new Irish record in 45.91 seconds in Germany. That he would lower that time in Birmingham with a time of 45.52 merely confirmed his status as one of Europe's most exciting athletes.
Greek Long Jumper Louis Tsatoumas took second place behind Gillick and ahead of Sweden's Stefan Holm.
"David's performances have been excellent over recent weeks and months," Brendan Hackett of Athletics Ireland said today. "He is an extremely talented individual and another success story for Irish athletics and I hope he will keep going from strength to strength."
