Gardai said yesterday they could not confirm that a tax assessment of £1.75 million had been served on Mr John Gilligan, who was charged with an alleged assault on journalist Veronica Guerin.

The charges were dropped following Ms Guerin's murder, when it was indicated that the State would not be offering any evidence.

The tax assessment is understood to have been served by the Crime Assets Bureau and representatives of the Revenue Commissioners at Jessbrook Equestrian Centre, Enfield, Co Meath, which is owned by Mr Gilligan's wife, Geraldine.
