Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore has offered condolences following the sudden death of Russia’s ambassador to Ireland at the weekend, writes Mary Fitzgerald.

The Russian embassy said Mikhail E Timoshkin died as a result of a heart attack on Saturday. His body was discovered by his housekeeper at his Ailesbury Road residence. Mr Timoshkin (61) is survived by his wife Olga, who lives in Moscow, and their daughter.

The embassy is making arrangements for the repatriation of his body. Mr Gilmore said he was saddened to hear of the envoy’s untimely death.

“Since his arrival in Ireland in 2006, Ambassador Timoshkin worked to strengthen the ties between our two countries and peoples,” he said. He paid tribute to Mr Timoshkin for his role in President Mary McAleese’s visit to Russia last year, and offered condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.
