GAA:Jason Sherlock was the last remaining link to the 1995 Dublin All-Ireland winning side but the veteran has hung up his county boots after manager Pat Gilroy no longer considers him part of his plans.

In something of a shake-up the manager plans to introduce at least five new players for Sunday’s SFC quarter-final against Wexford at Croke Park (throw-in 4pm).

Mick Fitzsimons, Philly McMahon and Rory O'Carroll are set to form a new-look back line, while Niall Corkery and Kevin McManamon will make championship debuts up front.

Gilroy revealed his plans at an early morning press conference at the Regency Hotel after training and insisted players were selected on form.

Stephen Cluxton, Denis Bastick, David Henry, Barry Cahill, Ross McConnell, Paul Flynn, Conal Keaney, and Bernard Brogan are the only players from last year’s defeat to Kerry in the quarter-final to retain their place.

Kevin Bonner, Paul Casey, Ross O'Carroll, Alan Hubbard and Darren Magee were not considered due to injury.

Gilroy added that Sherlock no longer fitted into the style of play he was looking for in this year’s campaign and said “it is time to move on”. The 34-year-old didn’t play any part of Dublin’s 2009 league campaign but made him self available for this year’s championship.

“Jason hasn’t trained with us at all this year. We spoke over the last month after the Club Championship and our feeling as a management team was that the kind of game we are playing now, it was the right time to leave Jason off,” Gilroy said of his former team-mate.

“He has been an outstanding player for Dublin, a former colleague of mine, so it wasn’t the easiest decision to make.

“Jason was still making himself available and I think that is the mark of the guy. His commitment to Dublin has been absolutely unquestionable but we just felt that it was the right time.

“It was not an easy decision to make and to be fair to him it was not an easy decision to make. He is the sort of guy that you miss but there are times when you have to say that it is time to move on.”
