A 15-year-old girl remained in a critical condition in hospital last night after an assault in Castleknock in Dublin nine days ago.
Rebecca Kiely from Dublin was struck with a baseball bat during a fight between two men as she was standing near St Brigid's GAA club on the old Navan Road at about 9.30pm on Friday, November 10th.
A Garda spokeswoman said Ms Kiely appeared to have been struck with a baseball bat that was swung following "an argument" between two men.
"It wasn't that someone intended to beat a child up. It appears that there was some sort of altercation between two men, and it was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time," she said.
Two men in their 40s were charged in connection with the incident yesterday at Dublin District Court.
The men, both of whom have addresses in Dublin, were charged with assault causing harm under section three of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997, and were remanded in custody to appear in court again next Monday.
Gardaí at Blanchardstown yesterday appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 01-6667000. In particular, they wish to speak to a cyclist who assisted at the scene.
