Pupils and staff at a north Dublin secondary school were said to be in a state of deep shock last night after a 15-year-old girl was killed in tragic circumstances on a railway line after she collected her Junior Cert results at her school.
The girl, who lived in north Co Dublin, had collected her results and had reportedly achieved six A grades and four B grades.
The Irish Times understands she mingled with a number of her schoolmates before going to Howth Junction train station where she was struck by the Connolly to Dundalk service.
A number of Junior Cert pupils at the station and the drivers of two trains travelling in opposite directions through the station witnessed the incident.
They were said to be deeply traumatised.
The train line remained closed until just after midday at which time normal services resumed.
Gardaí are treating the incident as a tragedy and are not looking for anybody else in relation to it.
The pupils and staff at the school cancelled all planned Junior Cert celebrations. Counselling was being made available to pupils.
