A 16-year-old schoolgirl, whose hand was injured when a window was smashed in her classroom, has been awarded €20,000 damages against the State.

Ms Louise Forrest, counsel for Ms Katie Delaney, Forest Hills, Rathcoole, Co Dublin, told the Circuit Civil Court the girl was injured when she put up her hand to shield her face from glass splinters.

Ms Forrest told Circuit Court President, Mr Justice Esmond Smyth, that a fellow pupil at Holy Family Community School, Rathcoole, had shattered a window pane.

Katie's left index and middle finger and palm had been lacerated and surgical exploration under general anaesthetic revealed a flexor tendon and nerve had been severed. She had since made a good recovery.
