A teenage girl, whose thigh was scalded when a hot water bottle burst as she walked upstairs to bed, has been awarded £9,000 damages in the Circuit Civil Court.

Mr Mark De Blacam, counsel for Ms Carla Canniffe (17) told Judge Liam Devally the accident happened when Ms Canniffe was 14 years old.

"She suffered a second degree burn and for some time she had been left with a six inches by four inches red blemish on her left thigh," Mr De Blacam said.

Mr De Blacam said Ms Canniffe, of The Rise, Mount Merrion, Co Dublin, had made a complete recovery and he was recommending acceptance of the offer by Dunnes Stores and the English manufacturers of the water bottle, the Haffenden Moulding Company Ltd.
