MEMBERS OF a Cork community are to oppose the granting of a waste permit to a company seeking to recycle 24,500 tonnes annually in Glanmire.

A petition was to be submitted last night to the environment department of Cork County Council following a public meeting on the issue attended by more than 200 people on Monday.

Locals claim the location for the proposed activities of Fermoy-based company Waste Recovery Services is “totally inappropriate”. They say homes are within 200m of the proposed recycling facility, while a primary school with 400 pupils and a secondary school with 800 students are located less than half a mile away.

Waste Management Services applied for a waste-management facility permit to Cork County Council on October 29th last.

The company plans to operate on a site in a business park in Brooklodge that secured planning permission to operate as a recycling facility in 2007.

A sign advertising the company’s intention to apply for a waste-management permit was erected 45ft from the road in the business park, leaving locals unaware of the company’s proposals, according to Glanmire Community Council chairman Michael O’Connor.

“Our grounds for objection are that the sign was not placed on the road, where it could easily be seen. As a result it attracted no objections,” said Mr O’Connor.

A spokesman for the council’s environment department said locals could make submissions on the application for the wastemanagement permit as the council required further information from the company. “No decision has been made yet. However, there is planning already in place at the site. They are proposing to deal with 24,500 tonnes of various recycling materials annually.”

A representative for Waste Recovery Services was unavailable for comment yesterday.
