Det Sgt Sheehan said the driver chosen was a Wicklow man, Mr Gary McNulty, who is currently awaiting trial in Belgium.

Mr George Birmingham SC, defending, pleaded for leniency because of Grennell's early guilty plea and the co-operation he gave to gardai.

Judge Dunne suspended the final year of the sentence.
