Olympics - Swimming: Melanie Nocher's first Olympic experience ended in disappointment today after a problem with her goggles cost her any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals of the 200m freestyle.
The 20-year-old from Belfast made a promising start in heat 2 at the Water Cube but paused to adjust her goggles after they began filling with water.
The stoppage, albeit brief, robbed Nocher of any momentum and she ended up trailing home last in a time of 2 minutes, 4.29 seconds.
Nocher, a backstroke specialist, goes in her favoured event on Thursday and is unlikely to make such a basic mistake again.
