TEAM IRELAND: For the second day running, Team Ireland brought home six gold medals, giving family and friends plenty to cheer in a range of sports.
The equestrian squad landed four golds, with local hero Stephen Roche, from Athy, Co Kildare, among those raising the roof at the Kill International Equestrian Centre. Clare's Mary Crosse, Dessie Gonoude from Tullamore, Co Offaly and Jane Spillane from Corbally, Co Limerick, also won gold medals.
A further nine athletes in the squad took silver and bronze medals. They were Cork's Gerard Healy, John Deevy from Waterford, Niall Masterson, Mullingar and Mary Swift, Sligo (all silver). Corkonians Kevin O'Connor and Eimear O'Callaghan, Mayo's Michael Joyce, Ashley Coleman, Dunlavin, Co Wicklow, and Ann Foley from Abbeyleix.
Team Ireland's first medals in bocce also came yesterday with a gold for Pamela Mayes from Co Down. Joanne Donnell won silver while June Webb and Sheanie McQuaid took bronze medals. There was also a first gold in 10-pin bowling, won by 19-year-old Kiera Joyce from Castlebar, Co Mayo.
Although fewer athletes were performing on the track than usual yesterday, those who did turn out excelled. Monica Byrne from Irishtown, Dublin, took a silver in her division with a standing long jump of 1.3 metres, while Fergal O'Regan from Cork won bronze in the 400m.
Other athletes performed at, or above, their best, without bringing home medals. Moira Moran jumped 3m in her long jump division, putting her sixth of eight, while Michael Mullins clocked 1 min 12.86 secs in the 400m, a strong fifth in his category.
